Requesting a Device Reset to Factory Settings (Wipe) from Electric

Learn about the considerations and instructions for resetting Mac and Windows devices.

Updated over a week ago

Introduction

Wiping a computer means resetting the device to its default, factory settings. Circumstances such as a corrupt operating system, need to re-use for a new employee, or desire to improve device performance may result in the decision to wipe a computer.

Returning your device to factory settings will erase all files and data from the device. Therefore, Electric recommends backing up your information to a physical hard drive or to the Cloud prior to proceeding with a wipe. If you are unsure about whether you should wipe a computer, contact Electric’s Service Desk.

Factory Resets Performed by Electric

Electric can send a remote wipe command to a Mac or Windows device without needing to log in as long as the device is an Electric supported device enrolled in Jamf Pro or Kaseya.

To request a device be remotely wiped, a company approver should contact Electric's Service Desk or your Customer Success Manager. Please provide the Serial Number of the device that you wish to have wiped and confirm the Date that the request should be executed. Electric will take care of the rest!

The wipe was successful, now what?

When a device has been restored to factory settings, Electric’s device management software is removed. You will need to manually install the software again. This process requires company-specific installation links. If you do not have these, contact Electric’s Service Desk for assistance.

For Mac devices, in addition to re-installing Jamf Pro, you will need to reinstall macOS. Instructions to do so can be found in Apple’s Support Center.
