This article will walk you through how to set up Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) for Microsoft.

Updated over a week ago

Introduction

Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) will increase the security of both your email account and your organization by adding an extra layer of security to your account in the event that your password is stolen. Please note, Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) may also be referred to as 2-Factor Authentication (2FA).

To begin this process, you will need to have your mobile device for text message (SMS) authentication.

How to Activate MFA for your Microsoft Account

  1. Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/ and sign into your account.

  2. Once signed in, look for the Security Info widget and then click on Update Info.

  3. Click on Add A Method.

  4. From the dropdown menu, select Phone. From there select the correct country, type in your phone number, and select how you would like to get your code: Text or Call. Then click Next.

  5. Once this is completed, you will see a message that indicates SMS verified. Your phone was registered successfully.

  6. Click Done to finish the process.

You can repeat this process to add other methods such as using an Authenticator.

If you use your Microsoft 365 login for other applications (i.e. Apple Mail) you may need to create a unique App Password in order to log in on those applications. Learn how here.
