JumpCloud MDM: Lock & Unlock Devices

Getting Started

With JumpCloud's MDM, you can remotely lock and unlock devices if needed. This article will show you the steps you need to take to lock and unlock devices in the Electric IT Hub.

Note: this feature is currently only available to Pro Package customers.


How to Lock a Device

Head over to the People Page in the Electric IT Hub and select "Active Employees."

Once you're here, select the employee whose device you want to lock.


Step 1

Click on their name to open their employee profile.

In their employee profile, you will be able to see what device this employee has been issued and its specifications. In this example, you can see Buster Bluth's Macbook Air under the Device module.


Step 2

From this page, you can click the "Lock Device" button to lock the device.

Electric will ask you to confirm if you want to lock the device, and select "Lock Device" to proceed.


After you click "Lock Device" the employee's device will switch to "Lock Pending" until the device is connected to the internet.


How to Unlock a Device (MacOS)

When a device is locked, a screen will appear on the screen of the locked device stating that the device is locked and needs the System PIN to unlock the device.

Step 1

If you would like to unlock the device, click the "Unlock Device" button on the People Page.


Step 2

This will provide you with a 6-digit PIN required to unlock the device. Share this PIN with the employee so they can unlock their device.

Once you've completed the steps above, you're all set!


How to Unlock a Device (Windows)

When a device is locked, the user will simply need to log in once the device is unlocked.

Step 1

If you would like to unlock the device, click the "Unlock Device" button on the People Page.

Once you've clicked "Unlock Device," you employee will be able to access their device again.


What to do if a device is not enrolled in MDM

You will not be able to lock and unlock a device if it is not enrolled in MDM.

From the Employee Profile, you will see a "MDM not installed" tag under the device module if the device is not enrolled in MDM.

Click "Send MDM Instructions" to send the employee detailed instructions to get their device enrolled in MDM.

You can preview the email before sending it. Once you're ready, click "Send Email" to send these instructions to your employee.

Once your employee has enrolled their device in MDM, a green MDM badge will appear in their Employee Profile under the "Unlock Device" button.
