Support for users that need help with Apple Activation Lock.

Updated over a year ago

Introduction

Activation Lock is a feature that's designed to prevent anyone else from using a device if it's ever lost or stolen. Activation Lock turns on automatically when you turn on the Find My feature on your device.

Prerequisites to disable Activation Lock

Before Activation Lock can be disabled, please note:

  • You must be the device owner and have proof of purchase to perform/request to have Activation Lock disabled. If your device was purchased through Apple, a representative may be able to help you obtain proof of purchase.

  • If your device is owned by a business, contact the internal IT department for support.

  • Your data on the device will be erased; this includes all files stored on the device.

  • Restoring your device from a local back-up will re-enable Activation Lock.

  • Your device must not be in Lost Mode when you request to disable Activation Lock.

  • Activation Lock can take more than 10 days to disable as apple has to process the request and perform an investigation before the lock can be removed.

Methods to Turn Off Activation Lock

  • Call Apple Business Support (866) 902-7144 and they will send you a form via secure message to request a business activation lock removal. Apple Business Support hours are 9:00AM - 8:00PM EST.

  • Follow the instructions provided in Apple's Support Center, here.

  • If the device is in your possession, visit the Apple Store Genius Bar. Bring the device and proof of ownership with you. Proof of ownership must include the device Serial Number, IMEI, or MEID.

  • Contact the prior device owner and ask them to visit this support article, open a case, and provide proof of purchase for the device. This can take an average of 14 days to complete.
