Automated Windows PC Patching

Learn about Electric's mandatory PC patching policy.

Updated over a year ago

Introduction

Windows operating system code may contain security flaws, bugs, incompatibilities, and outdated software elements. As a result, the system may be more vulnerable to security threats. The good news is: Microsoft regularly releases patches, or operating system updates, in an effort to help fix identified flaws and prevent unauthorized access to your system(s).

Electric's automated PC patching policy is a requirement for all existing and new end users who have a Windows PC that is managed by Electric.

Automatic Patching for Windows PC End Users

Electric manages a policy in Kaseya, a Mobile Device Management software, that automatically pushes patch updates when they are released by Microsoft for Windows OS versions. Below is an outline of what end users can expect.

System checks for pending patches on Fridays after 5:00 PM local time.

  • If updates are available, a prompt to install the update(s) will appear on the user’s device that requires a Yes or No response.

    • If the user selects Yes, the computer will reboot and security patches will be installed.

    • If the user selects No, the prompt will be deferred for 24-hours. If the user continues to defer the reboot, one will be forced after 12:00 AM on the Tuesday following the first prompt.

    • If an update is identified when a user is logged out of their device, the device will reboot automatically.

  • If no updates are available, no reboot or prompt response is required

End users should expect 30 minutes of downtime when installing an update(s).

During this time, end users will not be able to use their machine. We recommend allowing for a few additional minutes of downtime upon logging back in to their device for the update(s) to reconcile.
