Electric Device Management | Understanding Device & Asset Statuses

Introduction

Device statuses are a quick pulse check that tells you how each device is performing and what it might need. These indicators aim to give you instant visibility into the health, security, and lifecycle stage of every asset in your organization.

Statuses can be found on the Device Management table and the Asset Management table within Electric from the left hand menu.

Device statuses help you:

  • Stay Secure: Identify which devices are protected by MDM and which might need enrollment to meet your security standards.

  • Plan Ahead: Spot devices approaching end-of-life before they become a risk.

  • Troubleshoot Faster: Pinpoint non-reporting or unhealthy devices so you can address issues before they impact your employees.

  • Maintain Compliance: Keep a clear record of your managed vs. unmanaged devices for audits.

How to Use This Guide

The table below maps each status to its definition and how to adjust that state. Use it as reference whenever you're reviewing your device fleet. A well-managed device fleet doesn't happen by accident. With these status indicators, you'll always know exactly where to focus your energy to keep your organization powered up and protected.

Device Management Status

Device Management Status

Definition

How Status is Adjusted

Managed

The device is successfully enrolled in MDM.

MDM is enrolled on the device. Ideal state for a MDM supported device.

Unmanaged

The device is not successfully enrolled in MDM but is capable of doing so.

Enrolling the device in MDM via the Electric for Desktop App will update the device to a state of Managed once the MDM is successfully enrolled.

Non-reporting

A device was enrolled and actively checking in to the MDM, but has not been checking in over 14 days with the Electric for Desktop App.

Restarting the Electric for Desktop App or the device itself will prompt a re-connection and update any device health and performance analytics.

Not applicable

The device cannot enroll in MDM at that moment. This could be because the device is in transit and thus not assigned to an employee or able to connect to the internet. Or, it could be a device type unsupported by the MDM, for example a Linux device.

Once the device is assigned to an active employee, employee should follow the steps to enroll the device which will update the status. Or, can be ignored if not a support device.

MDM Actions Status

MDM Actions Status

Definition

How Status is Adjusted

Locked

A successful lock event from the MDM on the device was executed.

An admin must select a lock action from the device/asset profile within Electric. Once the device is unlocked by an admin from the same profile interface, the status will be removed.

Wipe requested

A wipe event has been started, but might not be complete if the device is offline or powered down.

An admin must select a wipe action from the device/asset profile within Electric. Cannot be updated manually and is updated by the MDM. Will be updated to the below status of wiped when successful.

Wiped

A successful wipe event from the MDM on the device was executed.

An admin must select a wipe action from the device/asset profile within Electric. Cannot be updated manually and is updated by the MDM. Indicates a successful wipe.

Wipe timeout

A wipe event has been started but it has been over 90 days since that event was executed with a confirmation of a success or failure, so Electric stopped listening for the wipe complete.

Cannot be updated manually and is updated by Electric if the MDM stops communication. Device should be reset manually by a hard wipe on the actual device by an admin, warehouser, or the employee to resolve the status.

Unenroll requested

An unenroll event has been started, but might not complete if he device is offline or powered down.

Cannot be updated manually and is updated by Electric if the MDM stops communication. Device owner should manually wipe Electric programs on the device itself if the unenroll does not succeed remotely.

Lock error

A lock command failed to complete and the device might not be locked. The device might be offline or powered down, or the user of the device might have disrupted the lock process.

Cannot be updated manually and is updated by the MDM. Will update to Locked if successful.

Device Health and Performance Status

Device Health Status

Definition

How Status is Adjusted

x/100 GB

Displays the amount of storage currently used out of the total available capacity (e.g., 75/256 GB). Monitor devices approaching capacity. When storage climbs above 80-85%, it's time to help employees clear space or consider an upgrade.

Variable and dynamic based on the device itself, sourced from the analytics deployed by the Electric for Desktop App. Cannot be manually adjusted.

% Used

Shows storage consumption as a percentage of total disk space, making it easy to compare across devices with different capacities. Or, Reflects how much of the device's RAM is in use. Fluctuates based on open applications and background processes.

Variable and dynamic based on the device itself, sourced from the analytics deployed by the Electric for Desktop App. Cannot be manually adjusted.

EOL

The operating system has reached end-of-life and is no longer receiving security updates from the manufacturer. This device is vulnerable.

Data is sourced from the open source tool: https://endoflife.date/. Cannot be manually adjusted.

Near EOL

The operating system is approaching its end-of-life date. Support and security updates will stop soon. Begin budgeting for a device replacement if that device no longer support OS patching.

Data is sourced from the open source tool: https://endoflife.date/. Cannot be manually adjusted.

Supported

The device is running an operating system version that is actively supported by the manufacturer.

Data is sourced from the open source tool: https://endoflife.date/. Cannot be manually adjusted.

Poor

This health status can be in reference to GHz, Battery Cycles, and OS. Employees may experience frustrations with the performance of their device.

Variable and dynamic based on the device itself, sourced from the analytics deployed by the Electric for Desktop App. Cannot be manually adjusted.

OK

This health status can be in reference to GHz, Battery Cycles, and OS. Employees may want to order a new device soon or upgrade some of the device parts.

Variable and dynamic based on the device itself, sourced from the analytics deployed by the Electric for Desktop App. Cannot be manually adjusted.

Good

This health status can be in reference to GHz, Battery Cycles, and OS. Employees should be fully supported on a performant device.

Variable and dynamic based on the device itself, sourced from the analytics deployed by the Electric for Desktop App. Cannot be manually adjusted.

Unknown

Device has not downloaded and registered with the Electric for Desktop App. No data is syncing back to Electric yet, so the device health and performance is unknown.

Visit https://downloads.electric.ai/app to begin the process of linking your device to Electric, and enrolling in MDM where applicable.

Assets Status
